There's a lot of comfort to be found in the predictability of the night sky. But tranquil to the naked eye usually just means it's far away... Space is big and time is long, and just because you can't see something doesn't mean it isn't exploding.
To wit, a supernova that very visibly exploded a 1000 years ago (and made the days of several 11th century astro-nerds) faded out of sight just after a few weeks. Rediscovered in the 18th century as the Crab Nebula, the supernova's visual echo is glorious, and suggests SO MUCH MOTION in just a snapshot, a suggestion I find both awe and artistically inspiring.
This beauty is still "visually" expanding, by the way. If you stitch together the last 100 years of photography into a time lapse footage, you can see it yourself.
