The Kuiper belt is a flattish, donut shaped area that starts outside of Neptune's orbit (about 30AU*) and stretches out to about 55AU from the sun. It's roughly in the same plane as the orbits of the planets and is home to bazillions (technical term) of little rocky and icy bodies that orbit the sun and is the source of most of the short orbit comets in our system.
It's also the home of Pluto, who was redistricted out of the solar system and I'm still kinda mad about it.
